Choosing Your Degree

Before you select an Alaska education online program, you will have to settle on the type of degree you'd like to pursue. Here are a few questions that can help guide you when choosing a degree or major.

  1. What are my strengths and weaknesses? You should choose an Alaska education online program that allows you to utilize your strengths. Before you choose a degree, make a list of your strengths and weaknesses. For example, if you know you struggle with math and numbers, you obviously wouldn't want to choose an accounting program.
  2. Where is there the most demand? If you fail to consider the current job market and employment trends when you choose your degree, you could end up with a degree you enjoyed obtaining but that no employers want. When all is said and done, a fascinating degree won't do you any good if it doesn't make you more marketable as an employee. Look into degrees in areas that are rapidly growing, such as healthcare or technology, to maximize your employability.
  3. What is my ideal job? You may have already come across a career or position you'd really like to pursue. If so, start with that job and think backwards. What education and training are required to enter the field? If you don't have an idea of the career you want, do some research online or shadow a few professionals in fields that interest you.
  4. What are my preferences? You should choose an Alaska education online program that will eventually provide you with the kind of working environment you desire. For instance, you may want to work part-time or evening hours for a more flexible schedule. If so, you would obviously want to avoid degrees in demanding fields like business where you are expected to work well over 40 hours per week.
  5. How much time can I commit? When deciding on a degree, make sure to take your time constraints into account. Bachelor's degrees and certain professional degrees take four or more years to obtain, and this kind of time commitment may not be realistic for everyone. On the other hand, some Alaska education online schools offer associate's degrees and even MBAs that can be earned in as little as 18 months.
